Ghajinikanth Synopsis: A forgetful young man falls in love with a girl whose father hates his condition.

Ghajinikanth Review: With his previous two films, the adult comedies, Hara Hara Mahadevaki and Iruttu Araiyil Murattu Kuthu, Santhosh P Jayakumar earned a name as a hit filmmaker. Now, with Ghajinikanth, a remake of the Telugu hit, Bale Bale Magadivoy, he attempts a comedy for the general audience. However, the film exposes his shortcomings as a director and shows that the success of his previous films had to largely do with the adultness of the content and less to do with comedy.

His protagonist, Rajinikanth (Arya), was born in a theatre screening Dharmathin Thalaivan, and like one of Rajinikanth’s characters in that film, has a forgetful nature. The film doffs its hat at the older film by introducing its protagonist in underwear - he has forgotten to wear pants! This condition of Rajini is a constant source of embarrassment to his parents (Naren and Uma Padmanabhan), as they cannot find a suitable match for him. One prospective girl's father, Sathyamoorthi (Sampath) even insults Rajini because of this.

But as fate would have it, Rajini ends up falling in love with Sathyamoorthi's daughter, Vandhana (Sayyeshaa). But the girl is unaware of Rajini's forgetfulness. But how long can he continue with this facade, especially with Ajay, a cop who wants to marry Vandhana, trying to expose him?

Despite the film offering great scope for comedy, Ghajinikanth is entertaining only in places. The direction lacks a feel for the material and is largely flat. It doesn't help that Arya seems miscast. Rather than let the material generate the comedy, the actor tries too hard to make us laugh. And there is a distinct lack of chemistry between him and Sayyeshaa, who looks too young in some scenes where we see them together. It is left to the score to convey how we should react to a scene

That said there are scenes where the comedy works - like the episodes where Rajini tries to show off his forgetful nature as philanthropy, or the ones where Rajini and his friend (Sathish) swap places and try to cheat Sathyamoorthi. A baby-naming ceremony, where all these characters end up face-to-face, is quite hilarious. Some of the counters by Sathish, too, land well.

But most often, the comedy is a hit-and-miss affair, with the number of misses being greater (like when they try to pass off rhyming words (Sunny Leone and Dindigul Leoni) as their shtick). There are also a couple of times when adult jokes creep into the mix. And Vandhana's character feels like something written for Tamizh Padam 3. In the end, the film strongly reminds us of its hero - mildly amusing but instantly forgettable.
